Cancer Epidemiology Expert (Key Expert – Category II)

About the role

The Key Expert – Cancer Epidemiology will support the Syrian Ministry of Health in strengthening institutional capacity and governance. The role focuses on cancer epidemiological research, population‑based surveillance, statistical analysis and translating registry data into evidence‑based public‑health policies and national cancer‑control strategies.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical assistance for cancer epidemiology research, including incidence, prevalence, survival and trend analyses using registry‑derived data.
• Analyze and visualise cancer‑surveillance data with statistical software, applying age‑standardisation, survival‑analysis and data‑quality assessment methods.
• Translate epidemiological findings into policy briefs, technical reports and recommendations for national cancer‑control planning and resource allocation.
• Build analytical capacity of national counterparts through structured training, mentoring and competency‑based workshops.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health or a related quantitative discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of professional experience in epidemiological research or disease surveillance, with at least 4 years dedicated to cancer epidemiology or population‑based cancer‑registry analysis.
• Demonstrated experience producing peer‑reviewed publications or policy briefs that inform public‑health decisions.
• Excellent written and spoken English; working knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency in statistical software such as R, STATA, SPSS or SAS for data analysis and modelling.
• Advanced use of Microsoft Excel and data‑visualisation tools for epidemiological reporting.
• Knowledge of IARC/GLOBOCAN reporting standards and data‑quality assessment methods for cancer‑registry data.
