Head of General Ledger and Fixed Assets Section

About the role

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent, an independent humanitarian organization founded in 1942 and recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross, is recruiting a Head of General Ledger and Fixed Assets Section based in Damascus (Abou Remmaneh). The post leads the general ledger and fixed asset accounting team, oversees financial reporting and compliance, and supervises GL/FA accountants.

Key responsibilities

• Review and approve chart of accounts maintenance requests, journal vouchers, receipt vouchers and reconciliations, and verify that budgets are uploaded correctly to the system.
• Supervise, train and develop a team of GL/FA accountants, assign tasks and give performance feedback.
• Oversee general ledgers so that transactions are recorded accurately, completely and on time, and prepare and review financial statements (trial balances, balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements).
• Manage fixed assets, including acquisition, depreciation and disposal, and maintain fixed asset records in line with asset management policies.
• Ensure compliance with IFRS and coordinate with internal and external auditors.
• Prepare management reports, analyze financial data for trends, risks and opportunities, and provide strategic guidance to the accounting team.
• Develop accounting policies, procedures and controls, and oversee the implementation and maintenance of accounting systems.

Required profile

• University degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Data Science or a related field.
• Graduate of the Faculty of Economics / Accounting.
• 5 years of experience as a General Ledger accountant.
• Thorough knowledge of IFRS / IAS; prior experience with an ERP system is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and commitment to the seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Required skills

• Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, databases and visualization tools.
• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office; experience with data integration platforms or programming languages such as SQL, Python or R is preferred.
• Fluent spoken and written English and Arabic.
