Data and Information Systems Specialist

About the role

The Data and Information Systems Specialist will support the FAO Country Office in Syria in strengthening agriculture‑related data systems. The role ensures that high‑quality, timely data are available to inform policy, programme design and monitoring across the country’s agrifood sector.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and improve databases and information management tools for agricultural data.
• Coordinate data collection, validation and analysis with the Food Security Analysis Unit and other programme teams.
• Produce regular data reports, dashboards and visualisations for senior management and partners.
• Provide technical assistance and capacity‑building to national stakeholders on data standards and tools.
• Ensure compliance with FAO and UN data quality and security standards.

Required profile

• University degree in information technology, data science, agricultural informatics or a related field.
• Experience working with agricultural or food‑security data in a development or UN context.
• Strong analytical mindset and ability to work in a multicultural environment.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.

Required skills

• Database management (e.g., SQL, Access).
• Statistical and data analysis tools (e.g., R, SPSS, Excel).
• Data visualisation and reporting (e.g., PowerBI, Tableau).
• GIS or spatial data handling.
• Understanding of FAO/UN data standards and metadata practices.
