Area Manager - Syria (Aleppo)

About the role

Handicap International (Humanity & Inclusion) is recruiting an Area Manager for Aleppo, Syria, on a 12-month international contract starting 1 December 2026. The post covers Aleppo, Idlib and Hama governorates, where the security environment is volatile and regular field travel is required. The Area Manager leads the implementation of the organisation's operational strategy in the area, under the supervision of the Operations Manager, and reports to the Country Office.

Key responsibilities

• Lead implementation of the operational strategy in the assigned area, ensuring quality, effectiveness, compliance and strategic positioning of programmes
• Oversee project implementation, contribute to programme development, manage operational risks and coordinate between programme and support functions
• Monitor contextual developments, identify risks and opportunities and advise senior management on operational adaptations
• Ensure deployment of HI policies, standards and frameworks, including project quality, accountability, safeguarding, security and donor compliance
• Promote collaboration among programme, technical and support teams and strengthen the link between field operations and the Country Office
• Oversee security management in the area, supported by the Humanitarian Access and Security Department

Required profile

• Solid experience in the humanitarian sector
• Strong understanding of programme management, donor compliance and operational planning
• Ability to manage stress and adapt quickly to changing priorities and contexts
• Fluency in spoken and written English is compulsory; knowledge of Arabic is a strong asset

• Salary from 2,869 EUR gross per month depending on experience, plus 537 EUR net per month in the field and a hardship allowance of 250 EUR net per month
• 25 days of paid leave per year and R&R days according to mission level
• Housing in a collective guest house taken care of by HI, and a child allowance of 100 EUR per month per child (from the second, up to four)
