Legal Aid Protection Officer

About the role

The Legal Aid Protection Officer works under the Protection Team Leader and the Legal Aid Specialist to provide direct legal assistance, counseling, and information to displaced persons and refugees in Syria. The role supports the implementation of legal aid activities, contributes to legal analysis, and ensures quality legal services while upholding protection standards.

Key responsibilities

• Provide individual and group legal information on rights related to housing, land, property, civil documentation, and family law.
• Assist clients in obtaining civil documents such as birth, marriage, and identification papers.
• Monitor legislative and policy developments and report recurring protection challenges.
• Strengthen referral pathways with local legal service providers, bar associations, and NGOs.
• Advise and train DRC staff and partners on legal issues, human rights, and protection standards.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of professional experience providing legal services in Syria, especially to at‑risk clients and refugees.
• University degree in Syrian Law.
• Experience with NGO legal‑aid programming, including counseling and awareness‑raising.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct training on legal matters and to work with judicial, security, and administrative authorities.
• Strong intercultural sensitivity and excellent communication skills.
