Safety Officer

About the role

The Safety Officer supports the safety and security of DRC staff, assets and programme activities in the Northern Area of Syria. Reporting to the Safety, Access & Liaison Manager, the role integrates safety considerations into operational planning and ensures compliance with DRC’s Safety Risk Management System.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, verify, analyse and report safety‑related information, lead the local safety context group and provide timely updates to management.
• Prepare and submit Safety Incident Reports, conduct regular Safety Risk Assessments and monitor safety and access incidents, providing trend analysis and mitigation recommendations.
• Assess Minimum Operating Safety Standards, draft localized SOPs, deliver safety briefings and inductions, and ensure appropriate access controls at DRC facilities.
• Support the Incident Management Team, advise on safe programme development and strengthen national partners’ awareness of safety procedures.
• Engage with key stakeholders, including local authorities and community representatives, to facilitate safe and principled programme implementation.

Required profile

• Relevant university degree (e.g., political science, international development, economics) or equivalent qualification.
• Minimum 2–3 years of experience in safety operations with international or local NGOs.
• Experience engaging with national and sub‑national authorities and understanding of local governance dynamics.
• Ability to work flexibly, travel frequently to field sites on short notice and be available on‑call.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills with the capacity to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
