Cancer Epidemiology Expert

About the role

NTU International is seeking a senior Cancer Epidemiology Expert to support the EU‑funded Technical Assistance project for the Syrian Ministry of Health. The expert will strengthen cancer surveillance, analyse registry data and translate findings into evidence‑based policies and national cancer‑control strategies.

Key responsibilities

• Design and conduct descriptive and analytical epidemiological studies using cancer registry and health‑facility data, including incidence, prevalence, survival and trend analyses.
• Perform statistical modelling, age‑standardisation and survival analysis, and visualise results for policy briefs and technical reports.
• Assess data quality (completeness, validity, timeliness) and ensure compliance with IARC/GLOBOCAN reporting standards.
• Provide structured, competency‑based training and mentorship to national counterparts to build analytical capacity.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health or a related quantitative discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of professional experience in epidemiological research or disease surveillance, with at least 4 years focused on cancer epidemiology or population‑based cancer‑registry analysis.
• Proven track record of publishing peer‑reviewed articles, technical reports or policy briefs that translate epidemiological evidence into public‑health recommendations.
• Excellent written and spoken English; working knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency in statistical software such as R, STATA, SPSS or SAS.
• Advanced use of Microsoft Excel for data manipulation and reporting.
• Experience with data‑visualisation tools for epidemiological reporting.
