Cancer Epidemiology Expert

About the role

The project provides technical assistance to the Syrian Ministry of Health to strengthen institutional capacity and governance. The Cancer Epidemiology Expert will support cancer surveillance, data analysis and translation of registry findings into public‑health policies.

Key responsibilities

• Design and conduct descriptive and analytical epidemiological studies using cancer registry and health‑facility data.
• Perform statistical modelling, age‑standardisation, survival analysis and visualisation of surveillance data.
• Assess data quality (completeness, validity, timeliness) and ensure compliance with IARC/GLOBOCAN standards.
• Produce technical reports, policy briefs and peer‑reviewed publications to inform national cancer‑control strategies.
• Provide structured training and mentorship to build analytical capacity of national counterparts.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health or a related quantitative discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of professional experience in epidemiological research or disease surveillance, with at least 4 years in cancer epidemiology or population‑based cancer‑registry analysis.
• Demonstrated experience collaborating with cancer registries, health‑planning and digital‑transformation teams.
• Excellent written and spoken English; working knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency in statistical software such as R, STATA, SPSS or SAS.
• Advanced use of Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
• Experience with data‑visualisation tools for epidemiological reporting.
