Data and Information Systems Specialist

About the role

The Data and Information Systems Specialist will support the FAO Country Office in Syria to strengthen agriculture‑related data systems, improve information management and enable evidence‑based decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Map and assess existing agricultural data systems and develop data‑management and information‑sharing protocols.
• Establish reporting and tracking mechanisms, create dashboards and visualisations for core statistics such as crop yields, livestock census and market prices.
• Provide technical support, training and capacity‑building to FAO staff, the Ministry of Agriculture and other partners on data systems and dashboards.
• Develop data collection templates, ensure data quality, standardisation and facilitate links with research institutions and data providers.
• Contribute to the Syrian Agricultural Investment Map, interactive investor platform and investment guide.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in information systems, statistics, agricultural economics, GIS, data science or related field (or bachelor’s degree plus two additional years of relevant experience).
• Minimum five years of professional experience in data management and information systems.
• Working knowledge of English; Arabic is an advantage.
• Experience working with UN agencies or FAO systems is preferred.

Required skills

• Statistical and data‑visualisation tools (e.g., R, Python, Tableau, Power BI).
• Database management and data‑analysis techniques.
• Dashboard development and reporting system design.
• GIS and statistical software proficiency.
• Ability to design data protocols, templates and conduct quality‑assurance processes.
• Strong communication and training delivery skills.
