Disaster Risk Reduction Expert

About the role

UNICEF is seeking a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Expert to support national DRR initiatives in Syria. Working under the Chief of Field Operations and Emergency and the Deputy Representative for Programmes, the UN Volunteer will help strengthen coordination, develop strategies, and promote child‑sensitive, gender‑responsive approaches.

Key responsibilities

• Support the development and implementation of national DRR initiatives in collaboration with the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management and key stakeholders.
• Contribute to the review and updating of DRR strategies, risk assessments, contingency plans and related technical documents.
• Facilitate consultations, workshops and coordination forums with government entities, UN agencies, academia, civil society and development partners.
• Collect, analyse and consolidate information on disaster risks, vulnerabilities and resilience‑building initiatives.
• Prepare reports, briefing notes, presentations and other knowledge products, documenting lessons learned and best practices.
• Monitor project implementation, track progress against outputs and identify challenges and opportunities.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Public Administration, Social Policy, International Relations, Environmental Studies, International Development or a related field.
• Minimum 7 years of professional experience in Disaster Risk Reduction, Early Action, Emergency Preparedness, Public Policy, Government Systems, External Relations or Donor Coordination.
• Experience working with UN agencies, international organisations or development partners is an asset.
• Familiarity with national systems and international DRR frameworks is highly desirable.
• Fluent English (required).
