Associate Communications Officer

About the role

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Damascus is seeking an Associate Communications Officer to support its communications agenda. Reporting to the Representative of the OHCHR Syria Country Office, the incumbent will help shape narratives, monitor media, and engage audiences across multiple platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Gather insights from traditional, social and digital media monitoring to inform communications strategy.
• Assist in implementing communications campaigns that raise awareness and drive engagement with target audiences.
• Draft narratives, press releases, web stories, reports and infographics for UN and partner channels.
• Map media outlets, build relationships with journalists and support media outreach.
• Develop media lines for crisis and sensitive issues and coordinate press events.
• Act as spokesperson when required and contribute to content for radio, podcasts and other UN platforms.
• Support strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to maximise impact.

Required profile

• Professionalism with a strong sense of responsibility and ability to meet deadlines.
• Knowledge of misinformation, disinformation, hate speech and information‑integrity risks in fragile contexts.
• Familiarity with media‑monitoring tools and strategic communications principles.
• Ability to translate complex technical information into clear messages for diverse audiences.
