Political Affairs Officer

About the role

The Political Affairs Officer will work within the Office of the Special Envoy for Syria (OSE‑Syria) in Damascus, reporting directly to the Head of Office. The role involves monitoring political developments, providing early‑warning analysis, and supporting the United Nations’ mandate in the country.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and assess emerging political issues and trends, recommending UN actions and early‑warning advice.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of political events and thematic mandates relevant to the portfolio.
• Produce high‑quality written analysis, briefing notes, background papers, speeches and other correspondence.
• Maintain contacts with local authorities, UN agencies, NGOs, civil society, academic and research institutions.
• Participate in field visits, prepare meeting minutes and follow‑up activities.
• Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the Office’s programme of work.
• Carry out administrative tasks related to staff planning and budgeting.
• Collect, analyse and visualise data to identify trends and support decision‑making.
