Job description

About the role

The Mechanical Designer provides independent technical review of mechanical design deliverables produced by the design consultant for data centre facilities. Acting on behalf of the PMO, the designer verifies that submitted designs are technically sound, code-compliant, buildable and aligned with the project brief, employer requirements and applicable standards, from concept through Issued for Construction and Shop Drawings.

Key responsibilities

  • Review and assess mechanical design submissions (concept, schematic, detailed design, IFC and Shop Drawings) and issue structured, actionable review comments within agreed turnaround times.
  • Check cooling load calculations, CRAC/CRAH and chiller layouts, pipework schematics, fire fighting, HVAC ductwork and equipment specifications against project requirements and best practice.
  • Review fire suppression, plumbing and drainage packages for completeness, standard compliance and compatibility with other building and mechanical systems.
  • Verify compliance with Tier classification (TIA-942, Uptime Institute), resilience configurations (N+1, 2N) and PUE targets.
  • Check mechanical coordination across disciplines, identify spatial conflicts and interface gaps with electrical, CSA and ICT/ELV packages.
  • Review BIM models and coordination reports, verify LOD and that clash detection has been resolved before IFC issue.
  • Track open review comments, verify contractor responses and maintain a register of outstanding and closed issues.
  • Attend design reviews, coordination workshops and BIM sessions, prepare minutes and action trackers.
  • Support the PMO during construction by reviewing shop drawings, material submittals, method statements, FAT/SAT procedures and commissioning plans, and raise non-conformance records where needed.

Required profile

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Minimum 8-12 years of experience in mechanical engineering for data centres or mission-critical facilities, with a track record of design work on consultancy-side engagements.
  • Deep knowledge of data centre mechanical systems: precision cooling, diesel generators, BMS, drainage, fire suppression and HVAC.
  • Familiarity with Tier classification, resilience design and PUE benchmarking.
  • Strong written communication skills, able to produce clear, well-referenced review comment schedules.

Required skills

  • Proficiency reviewing mechanical packages in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, ETAP or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of BIM coordination (Revit, Navisworks) and LOD compliance.
  • Knowledge of IEC 60364, BS 7671, NFPA 70/75, ASHRAE A2 and local authority requirements.
