Assistant Human Rights Officer (3 positions)

About the role

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Syria is seeking three Assistant Human Rights Officers to support its programme and mission in Damascus. Reporting to the Representative or designee, the incumbents will contribute to research, analysis, and implementation of human‑rights initiatives across the country.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research and gender‑sensitive analysis on programme areas.
• Prepare and implement meetings, workshops, consultations and other activities.
• Draft, translate and circulate reports, briefings and correspondence.
• Undertake missions and field visits as required.
• Engage with UN actors, civil‑society representatives, diplomatic missions and potential programme partners.
• Support the annual office work‑plan and identify intervention opportunities.
• Monitor trials, summarise outcomes and maintain awareness of evolving human‑rights issues.
• Assist in delivering training programmes for law‑enforcement officials, NGOs and civil‑society groups.
• Help liaise with government, NGOs and UN agencies to collect baseline data, especially on vulnerable groups.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of human‑rights issues, including political, ethnic, racial, gender‑equality and socio‑economic dimensions.
• Familiarity with mandates of human‑rights organisations, policies and procedures.
• Excellent research, analytical and report‑writing abilities.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and maintain professionalism.
