Administration Associate - Translator/Interpreter (English-Arabic)

About the role

UNMAS Syria, based in Damascus, coordinates humanitarian mine action across Syria and advises the government on establishing a national mine action authority and centre. This Administration Associate role is an interpreter/translator position focused on supporting UNMAS field programmes, managed by UNOPS. It works under the supervision of the Senior Support Services officer.

Key responsibilities

• Provide full and precise bi-directional English-Arabic verbal and written translation and interpretation between the project and external and internal partners, covering economy, market and market development, energy efficiency, heating utilities, business development, finance and related topics.
• Accompany project team members to meetings and keep records of them as required.
• Proofread and edit reports, minutes, official and unofficial communications, documents and texts for the project team.
• Take notes during meetings, consolidate them and draft minutes of meetings, discussions and interviews.
• Maintain organized project documentation files.
• Organize and coordinate meetings and discussions, working with the Programme and Operations teams so that meetings and events run on schedule.
• Draft background materials and talking points for meetings.

Required profile

• A first-level university degree in linguistics or a related field, or another relevant area, complemented by courses or formal training in English-language translation and interpretation.
• 2 years of relevant experience in English-Arabic / Arabic-English translation and interpretation.
• Experience in humanitarian mine action activities is desirable.
