Associate Community Development Officer

About the role

The Associate Community Development Officer will support UNRWA’s camp improvement programmes in Syria by managing the social dimensions of projects and ensuring meaningful community participation. The role combines data collection, stakeholder engagement and coordination of project hand‑over activities.

Key responsibilities

• Organise and conduct community surveys, interviews and other data‑collection activities, analyse results and provide technical input on social aspects of camp improvement projects.
• Facilitate participatory planning through awareness sessions, community mobilisation, stakeholder engagement and capacity‑building activities, working closely with engineers and the camp improvement team.
• Support communication with stakeholders, arrange and moderate town‑hall meetings or similar events, handling logistics and participant inquiries.
• Maintain project documentation, enter data into UNRWA information systems and assist in preparing reports such as assessments, shelter scoring, grievance logs and post‑occupancy checks.
• Participate in shelter assessments and community meetings, ensuring the needs of women, persons with disabilities, the elderly and other vulnerable groups are captured.
• Coordinate hand‑over of public spaces, shelters and other infrastructure to refugee communities and manage the grievance process from receipt to follow‑up.
• Monitor project progress, prepare eligibility lists for improvement works and provide recommendations for corrective actions.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the project team.

Required profile

• University degree in Social Studies, Sociology, Psychology or a related field.
• Minimum of 3 years experience in community engagement, mobilisation or development projects.
• Very good command of written and spoken English and Arabic.
• Valid driving licence (desirable).
