Country Director – Syria

About the role

Relief International is seeking a Country Director to lead its operations in Syria, based in Damascus with extensive travel across the country. The role will oversee multi‑sector programmes in Health, Protection, WASH, Nutrition and Livelihoods, ensuring safety and strategic growth in a complex environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead strategic planning and operational execution of Relief International’s mission in Syria, aligning with organisational goals.
• Manage relationships with government authorities, donors and partners at central and governorate levels, representing the organisation.
• Oversee high‑quality programme implementation, ensuring proper resource allocation, compliance and timely spending.
• Ensure staff safety and security, managing risks and fostering a positive work environment.
• Drive programme growth by securing funding from new donors and building strong teams for sustained impact.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading large‑scale multi‑sector programmes in complex, high‑risk environments.
• Strong change‑management expertise, capable of guiding teams through transitions.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and public‑speaking skills for stakeholder engagement.
• Demonstrated ability to motivate diverse teams and promote a culture of accountability.
• Expertise in risk management and staff security protocols.
• Desirable experience working in the Middle East and knowledge of Health, Protection, WASH and Livelihoods sectors.
